Por Favor Volte Mais Tarde (Please Come Back Later) is a short-length movie about a relationship between two people and the space they live in. It is the second in the 3106 (copan) series, which explores loss, spontaneity and the complete symbiosis with its site.

The short is a minor study on ways to expand cinema using videomapping and interactive projections in a scripted story. The script and storyboard were written in the last few days I had in my apartment in São Paulo, which was greatly repurposed for the movie scenary and throughout all the 3106 (copan) series.

In the short, I used my custom controller to interact with a Processing sketch that painted my door, emphasizing the protagonist’s mood swing.

The soundtrack is being composed and made by me in Nanoloop, a Gameboy chiptune emulator.

I appreciate the help of my friends Helena – which greatly supported and helped me direct, photograph and act – and Ilê – who came up with the technique used to slide the camera in the first scene and also took a part in the movie.

URB

URB is a documentary synthesizing a week of workshops with guest lecturer Esther Polak, which took place in the city of The Hague. In these documentations, the city is explored as a space produced by its mobilities, and its different categories. Linking these concepts with Judith Butler ideas on performativity, we were invited to closely observe and study the URB, producing a lexicon - with new concepts, used throughout the film, such as “move-entity” (a pedestrian, a biker, a car) and “buildingness” (when a move-entity blocks mobility, acting as a building) and a series of quick experiments on streets and parks of the city center. The film was shot with a hi-8 camera and is composed of fast cuts and drifting planes through objects and move-entities, playing with the performativity of the city itself while also grasping onto the students’ conclusions during the workshop week.

Self-Surveillance Portraits (Hands, Parts I & II)

Self-surveillance-portrait (click on the stills for a link) is a three part video art series using CCTV cameras and a switcher. Part I has two cameras mounted on top of eachother with opposite orientations, and same angle. hands have the cameras pointing at one another and part II is a 4-camera setup in a circle. In these works, I play with switching speeds and body movement as composition parameters to create a self-portrait. The sequence of frames synthesizes impossible bodies: I appear to touch myself and break my fingers (hands) or wrap my neck around (part II). On a frame level, glitch artifacts are encountered, since the cameras are not synced and capture occurs mid-switching, revealing instants in time in which multiple selves occur.

Metaveillance

Metaveillance is an installation piece with 8 CCTV cameras, a switcher and a TV. The cameras are spread around the space, pointing at each other, the tv and the insides of the switcher. The video is a composition in which the bigger frame documents the installation whereas the smaller 4:3 frame captures the switcher output. The work builds upon the concepts of non-human photography (Joanna Zylinska), self-governance (Michel Foucault) and black boxes (Bruno Latour). The work is “directed” by the switcher, which swipes through the sources and overwatches the circuitry, making sure they function accordingly. In the end, a pointless CCTV system emerges with the sole purpose of watching its sub-systems to perform their work.
